Programs
SOUP, the Society of Underprivileged People, provides assistance to women and children through four key programs:
Snehlayam
The first of these programs is Snehlayam, which means a home of love and care. Snehlayam is a shelter home that is focused on transforming trafficked and abused children into well-educated, self-reliant citizens of India .
Through Snehlayam the Society of Underprivileged People provides comprehensive assistance including food, clothing, shelter, vocational training, medical care, and counseling to children of all ages. Having these basic needs met creates an atmosphere in which these children may pursue and complete their education.
Bal Manch
A second program of the Society Of Underprivileged People is Bal Manch. Bal Manch is a children's club through which children participate in regional social activities and establish friendships.
Beti
A third program of SOUP is Beti. Beti, which means “daughter”, is a non-residential program for girls of all ages and academic levels. Because of the social inequality of girls, they are the foremost sufferers in the web of human trafficking. Providing them with education and job skills is critical in the fight against trafficking.
The girls in this program may reside anywhere, such as impoverished slums and villages. SOUP's goal is to sponsor any or all of their educational and living expenses as long as they remain full-time students. This enables these girls to obtain good occupations and become self-reliant.
Referral & Rescue
In addition to these other programs, SOUP runs a referral and rescue program in the Red light district of Allahabad. Women who are forced into prostitution are given counseling and HIV awareness education, and many women have been helped to form economic cooperatives.
